LIF - MusicNSW

Processed with VSCOcam with m5 preset

Sound designer, multi-instrumentalist Felipe Cea performing under the name of LIF, started his musical career as a member of an alternative band in mid 90s. Since then he has kept busy experimenting with sounds, adapting different musical styles and techniques which eventually led to the production of his own unique waves. He is currently signed to Lyfeik Records.

How would you describe your music in just 3 words?

Mindful, detailed and unplanned.

Tell us a little about yourself, and how you came about as an artist?

I have always been interested in sounds and developed my passion for writing music from a very early age. I’ve played in various groups with different genres and started experimenting with sound design in the late 90s which led to various projects and eventually my own, LIF.

What musical influences shape your sound?

Sound in general – whether it be natural or synthetic. I enjoy anything from Mozart, Bach to Toro Y Moi and Flying Lotus. I try very hard not take on a biased point; which motivates me to scavenge any types of genre and musical styles.

What is your proudest moment so far as an artist?

The very first time I wrote a piece of music on my own.

When will you be putting out an official release and what can we expect from it?

I plan on releasing my debut EP early 2015, but will be releasing several singles leading up to it. There will be a large experimental aspect to them, but still in the works.

What advice do you have to other young musicians trying to break into the music industry?

I would say not to worry too much about the promotional aspect, but more about tapping into your skills and developing a unique sound. The rest will follow, but if not, you still get to have fun doing it.

If you could collaborate with any Sydney based artist or band, who would it be?

Any artist with a unique workflow and sounds, I would be happy to collaborate with.

What are the benefits of being signed to an independent record label such as Lyfeik Records?

Being surrounded by a support network of people, who have diverse artistic opinions, and are more than happy to assist you with finding your own direction.

What can we expect to see from you in 2015?

I’ve released a free drumtrack by sampling sounds from the Aussie bush this year and really enjoyed the whole process/feedback I’ve gotten from the community. I think I’ll be doing more of that in 2015 as well as doing more experimental sound design.
