We Are Volcanoes - MusicNSW

November two thousand and eight marks the birth (or for irony’s sake, the ‘eruption’) of the musical collective We Are Volcanoes. Comprising of three very strange, yet compatible artists, the band, whose sounds are influenced – though not entirely defined by – a myriad of genres, mainly accredits the product of it’s creative work to the widely differing traits of each member. (Taken from their MySpace).

1. What was the first band you saw live?
Jacob: I Killed The Prom Queen
Dean: PVT and Sigur Ros.
Tim: Philadelphia Grand Jury, everything before that was dead

2. What’d you learn from them?
Jacob: I learnt that a lot of entertainment does not have to come from the band (directly) if the crowd is active enough. I also learnt if you’re a gig-attendee planning to dive into the crowd from atop a 5m tall speaker stack, make sure the crowd is willing to catch you.
Dean: A couple of sweet drum beats.
Tim: They taught me the importance of a good performance, pretty songs are nice, but the majority of people want to see someone eat a microphone and almost die, I know I do!

3. Got any pre-gig rituals?
Jacob: I haven’t been to enough to develop any! But alas I am young and the HSC is almost over!
Dean: Shave & tap my testicle.
Tim: I spend a few minutes laughing at dean because he only has one testicle.

4. What do you think the most important issue effecting artists in NSW is today?
Jacob: Bass player leprosy of sorts; causing bassists to lose use of their fingers, particularly on their right hand! Bassists are using picks! I think it’s becoming an all too common!
Dean: The ever-changing face of the music industry.
Tim: Making a living off music is difficult in NSW, that’s what the veterans tell me anyway, I am not educated enough to give you a resolution, but the masses need to be told there are alternatives existing right underneath their noses. Lil John ain’t bad ass, we’re bad ass.

5. If you weren’t a musician what do you reckon you’d be doing?
Jacob: I would have traveled to Russia (something something) and taken up bodybuilding.
Dean: Being a captain of industry, the engineer.
Tim: I would be playing the drums, get it?!
