DIY releasing isn't just about skipping the middleman. It's about making something tangible, building a community around it, and deciding for yourself what your music means.
Come along to Rikota Studios and join the discussion at this three-part workshop that focuses on the importance of sustaining DIY music culture. You'll hear from DJ and radio host Bria Kennedy (fbi radio) on curation as culture and the value of collaboration; Jack Wotton (Prop Records) on DIY principles and physical releasing as creative resistance; and local artist Setwun on what it actually looks like to navigate the independent music landscape on your own terms.
You'll leave with practical skills for releasing music alternatively – physically via CD and cassette, and digitally – plus hands-on skills in DIY mixtape art and collage. Then, you’ll get the opportunity to connect with industry by making a mixtape for a new friend in the room.
The night will end with food, drinks and a moment to connect with each other.

Bria is an Eora based DJ and radio presenter on fbi radio. Showcasing her broad taste and deep appreciation for the underground, she’s unrestrained by genre, gravitating towards percussive bass, progressive house & breaks. With sets at Strawberry Fields Festival, Sun Cycle, and Echo Beach, she’s been quietly making a name for herself across the country.

Jack Wotton is a multi-disciplinary artist and co-founder of Prop Records and Gallery in Ashfield on Wangal Land. Since 2022, Prop has become a vital space for music and visual arts in Sydney. Deeply embedded in the independent scene, Jack’s work demystifies the DIY process, equipping emerging creators to move from raw ideas to finished projects.

Setwun is the musical brainchild of singer-songwriter, composer, producer, multi-instrumentalist, and DJ Josh Panakera-Molony. Shapeshifting through sound, instinctively soulful, his brand of futurist fusion weaves through the purview of contemporary jazz, beats and electronica with feeling. The Eora-based, Solomon Islander-Australian is as versatile as he is prolific; a much respected figure within Australia’s ever-fertile music scene.
