Why setting goals matters

Setting creative goals is a crucial part of making music that is meaningful, intentional, and strategically positioned for your audience. It’s about more than just finishing a song, EP, or album - it’s about defining what you want to achieve creatively, who you want to reach, and how you want your work to be experienced.

Start by asking yourself the big-picture questions: What are my goals in making this song? or Who do I want to reach and engage with this release? Your answers will guide every decision in the creative and release process, from songwriting and recording, to marketing, touring, and fan engagement.

Creative goal setting isn’t just about logistics - it’s also about defining the artistic vision

Your creative goals should be:

  • Specific: Clearly define what you want to accomplish. For example, instead of “release an EP,” aim for “record a 6-song EP with a consistent sonic identity and artwork ready for distribution by [date].”
  • Measurable: Identify indicators of success. This could include the number of streams, playlist placements, media coverage, live show attendance, or fan engagement metrics.
  • Achievable: Make sure your goals are realistic within your available time, budget, and resources. Ambition is good - but unattainable goals can stall progress.
  • Action-oriented: Each goal should have aligned tactics or steps that move you toward achieving it. For instance, if your goal is to reach new listeners, tactics could include submitting to playlists, creating social content, or targeting radio stations.

Consider questions like:

  • What do you want your audience to feel when they listen to this music?
  • How does this project reflect your growth as an artist?
  • What story are you telling, and how will it connect with listeners?

Reviewing your progress

Finally, review and refine your goals regularly. As the creative process unfolds, you may discover new directions, opportunities, or challenges. Keeping your goals flexible and aligned with both your creative vision and practical resources ensures that your work remains purposeful and your release strategy effective.
